For Parvathi, pregnancy was all about new beginnings

– in more ways than one…

My fascination for beauty started long before I could spell the word itself…

As the only child of hardworking scientists, my evenings were often spent mixing formulations in my parents’ lab. In order to keep me interested, my mother would explain that one day these potions and ingredients would be used to make cosmetics. My fascination soon developed from wanting to make cosmetics to wanting to see them in action, and when I was six years old, I persuaded my parents to buy me a Lil’ Miss Makeup doll. Little did I know that my childhood playtime would set the stage for a long career in beauty…

After I graduated from college, working in the big-corporate beauty industry was the perfect next step. Over the next decade I had the chance to work on some of the largest beauty brands in the world. The years passed by quickly and soon I found myself at a thrilling point in my life – I was going to have a baby!

Pregnancy brings about many changes, both internally and externally, physically and emotionally. There are the obvious thoughts you have, about how there is a little, precious life growing inside you… And then there are some changes that you don’t really think of until you start experiencing them – your skin starts stretching and becomes dry and itchy, you are suddenly worried about the safety of every product you are using, and you are concerned about growing so much bigger and not looking like yourself anymore.

Thanks to my scientist parents and a long history in the beauty industry, I knew I needed to change my beauty routine and adopt a new one. One that took care of all these new skin concerns I had, and one that would guarantee me the safety and peace of mind I was looking for. But I also still wanted to use products that made me feel indulged, invigorated, and of course, beautiful.

That’s when, for the first time, the beauty industry that I had loved so much failed me. The only products for pregnancy I could find were dull, boring and unappealing – they were either too clinical-looking (but I wasn’t a patient!) or too baby-looking (but I was having a baby, not becoming one!).

It was as if the beauty industry was telling me that now that I was pregnant, my beauty needs didn’t matter anymore…

I decided that it would be a wonderful idea to create a beauty range for pregnancy – one that not only cared for the specific needs and concerns around this time in a woman’s life, but one that was also so beautiful any woman would want to Instagram it the second they saw it!

I called upon the best scientists I could think of – my parents – for advice. My father, an anti-cancer scientist, and my mother, a neurobiologist, had 80 years of experience between them researching the power of natural ingredients. Born in the tropical state of Kerala in India, they were exposed to the wealth of the nature that surrounded them. While they explored the pharmaceutical properties of tropical ingredients as part of their professional research, at home they took advantage of the cosmetic properties of these ingredients to whip up homemade face masks from turmeric, gooseberry and orange peel alongside shampoos and conditioners full of hibiscus and coconut. Our products when I was growing up were as natural as natural could be! My parents knew exactly which ingredients to pick to help me with my skin concerns during my pregnancy, and which ones would ensure the safety of their future grandchild.

Calling on friends who were experts in different areas of beauty, I slowly built a trusty and dedicated team around me and together, we created Unity Beauty Essentials. We ended up launching the brand the day I gave birth to my son!

I have to admit that embarking on so many new beginnings all at once has not been without its challenges. But it has been truly amazing to see Unity, created by a pregnant woman for other pregnant women, grow into a brand that is now admired by all women.

So here’s to celebrating new beginnings…
